Keeping Teenage Auto Insurance Rates Low

Once your teenage son or daughter is added to your insurance policy your rates are going to increase. How much your premium will increase is going to vary depending on how an underwriting department quantifies this additional risk. Lets face it, your child probably has very little driving experience, youve probably witnessed it while teaching them how to drive. The chances of them being in a car accident are greater than any other age group on the road.
However, there are a few things you can do to hold your rates from completely skyrocketing.
1.Encourage your teenager to enroll in a drivers education course. Even if this means that they'll be staying after school for a few weeks to drive around in one of those student driver cars, its well worth it. Many insurance companies will discount your auto insurance premium once your child has successfully completed this course.
2. Encourage high academic performance. Many auto insurance companies will offer a discounted rate for teenage drivers who maintain a certain grade point average. Be prepared to provide your agent with a copy of your teenagers report card.
3. Increase your deductible. This will lower your auto insurance premium even if you dont have a teenage driver listed on your policy. Of course, you may regret the higher deductible if you file a claim.
4. Forget the flashy sport car, at least for now. Instead, if you must purchase junior a car, purchase something safe and inexpensive to insure. To be safe, request an insurance quote BEFORE you purchase the car.
5. Shop around and compare rates. Some insurance companies identify your teenager as a greater risk than others.
