In the near future, the world as we know it no longer exists. The
U.S. economy has collapsed, leading to the fall of the government
and the end of the American way of life. People are forced to live
off the land at a time when global warming seems to be drastically
changing growing conditions for the worst. Bartering is the way most
people get what they need to survive. After years of fighting to
keep what you have, individuals now live always looking out for somebody
trying to come and take it away. And they do come. Kenny has lived a
long time watching the downward spiral and making his choices based
on his best guess of what was to come. He lives a lonely life now on
his mountaintop with a few cherished friends nearby, but without the
love of his life. He sees the signs that trouble, enormous trouble, is on
the way, but has no idea his greatest blessing just may arrive in
the end.

Terry is a young man leaving his commune home looking for answers
from somebody who lived through the fall. He never expects the
journey to be one of self-discovery. Then he meets up with Stella,
who is literally running for her very freedom, and on their travels
together, they find something neither of them ever expected to
find. All the players in the game of life, love, and the search for
a place to belong.

For any reader that has never read a book by this author, I
recommend this novel to be the one to choose the first. Of course,
once you read one, you will no doubt be back for more. Kenneth E.
Baker is a master storyteller spinning a web which draws the reader
in and leaves them not wanting to escape. He has a way of taking
ordinary everyday individuals and making them into heroes, individuals you
would be proud to call your friends. His stories are fascinating and
full of depth, and his characters are colorful and dynamic.

I have read several of this author's books now and each one has left
me with those feelings without fail. This book in particular, led me
through a myriad of emotions starting with a enormous laugh, which can be
quite embarrassing when you are sitting at the computer screen late
at night in a silent room and there are other individuals nearby! I went
from anger, to surprise and even to a cry in the end. In my opinion,
anytime you find yourself thinking about a book and who the
characters were and what kind of message you have taken away from
the story, the author has done his job and done it well. Well done,
Mr. Baker!

At 400 pages, it is a long read and yet the pages flew by. I loved this book, perhaps the only fault I can find is in the cliffhanger ending which can be like torture for me as I wait and wonder until the next installment finally is released. Believe me KENNETH E. BAKER has a new fan now, one who like Stalker will be watching from the shadows for his next work.
