Electronic resources have changed public services

Author: Carey Metelerkamp

Research shows publishers, in general, are still in denial about the growing online distribution threat. Nearly 70% of U.S. adults are on the Internet through a connection at home, work, school, library or other location. Fully 80% of those seek news online, with the median time spent being one hour a week.

To state that electronic resources in the library have changed public services is obvious. The number of electronic resources has increased exponentially over the last few years and we have seen first hand that electronic resources affect how users perform their library research. We have also seen that users' perception of the library changes as more of the collection becomes available online.

eBook Impressions announced that it can now provide UK academic libraries and corporate organisations with greater access to same-day international online newspapers.

The solution is an online newspaper portal that offers over 200 newspapers from 53 countries around the world, in 33 languages. All newspapers on the service are published online in their original format and layout, including illustrations. The service provides sophisticated digital tools such as a "drag & read" full screen mode, magnifying lens, bookmarks, search function, and a 60-day archive. Newspapers are available almost immediately after they are printed in their local market, and in some cases, due to time zone differences, readers in the UK can view the next day's news from some areas of the world.

By offering this electronic resource organisations will be able to improve research efficiency, support diverse communities and provide up to date, accurate information. With soaring costs of postage and print subscriptions this tool provides a cost-effective solution and in turn helps save the environment.' said Carey Metelerkamp, eBook Impressions Managing Director
