How often do we hear individuals say that they hate going to work? I personally hear this all of the time, and each time I have to wonder, why did they choose that career path? Work is something that takes up most of the day for almost everyone, and though it is not life, it seems that we live at the work place in order to meet our responsibilities. In my opinion, if you are going to work, choose something that is going to make you happy. Here are a few things to consider in selecting your career:
- Does this career path interest you? If you are the type of person who enjoys being outdoors all of the time, will sitting in an office make you happy? Remember, a job is just a job if you are not the least bit interested in the things you are doing on a day to day basis. Selecting something which will challenge your skills and give you inspiration to wake up each day should be at the base of your career selection process. Dont be afraid to start at the bottom, as long as there is room for improvement and it makes you happy; go for it.
- Is this a Cruise Control career? What I mean to say is this: will your skills be challenged in this career ? If you go to work doing the same thing every day, it will be difficult to gain marketable skills for the future. Often times, a bumpy road might lead to higher levels of achievement. Proving to yourself that you can do something which you never though possible will not only increase your confidence, but will demonstrate your determination and proficiency to others. A challenge never hurt anybody.
- Compensation: In the past I have been asked, does money motivate you? This is a question which can be answered in many ways, but in your career selection process, it should be considered. Each person has an idea of how they would like to live, and the right job can make that happen. If your dream job is a low salary position, but it makes you happy and suites your needs, it might be a better fit than a high paying salary position, which makes your day miserable. You have to remember, in order to enjoy your career, you have to love what you are doing.
- Is this where your passion lies? A job can be fun, and it should be a place where you look forward to being. After all, you have invested so much of your time preparing for it. If you go to work happy, enjoying your career, the better your chances of leaving work happy. Choose wisely, but follow your heart. If you are passionate about your career, success will come.
Going to work doesnt have to be a thorn in your side; rather it can be an excellent opportunity to increase happiness in your life. If you find yourself in a position where you hate going to work, maybe there are some major changes in your life which have to be taken, because you deserve to be happy in your career.
