Subaru Outback. Keeping All Four Down

Author: Kerry Plowright

The all wheel drive Subaru Outback has proven a highly well-liked selection in Australia, especially among those who often find themselves driving on country roads. With the styling and finish we have come to expect from Subaru, the Outback offers a viable option to the many soft-roaders and off-roaders available on the Australian market.

The Subaru Outback is an impressive wagon that feels as comfortable on the dirt or snow and ice as it does on the tar. With Subaru's renowned symmetrical all wheel drive system providing a higher level of grip, power and balance, the Subaru Outback is sure-footed wherever it is being driven. While the Subaru Outback is not a true off-road vehicle, it does have off-road capabilities that will get you out of trouble if need be. The Subaru Outback makes a worthy towing vehicle too.

The Outback is available in five different models:
Outback 2.5i
Outback 2.5i Safety
Outback 2.5i Premium
Outback 3.0R, and
Outback 2.0R Premium.

The basic model Outback 2.5i has all the features you would expect from Subaru including four wheel disc ABS brakes, dual front and front side airbags, 6 speaker stereo, cruise control, leather steering wheel, climate control air conditioning and 16" alloy wheels.

At the top end, the Outback 3.0R Premium includes a 6 stacker CD player, leather trim, a dual sunroof, Momo leather steering wheel with audio controls, 8 way power driver's seat and 17" alloys.

If you're in the market for a one owner used car, then check out the Subaru Outback H6 six-cylinder over the earlier four-cylinder models. These will cost a bit more, but will be worth the extra money. As many of these used Subaru Outbacks will have ventured off the bitumen at some stage, check for damage under the car. Also, check for sand in or under the carpets. If you find any, be aware that the car may have been on the beach, so it might be best to hold looking elsewhere. An necessary point to remember also is that Subaru offers a 3 year unlimited kilometre warranty, so if you can, go for one that is under three years old and take advantage of the unlimited kilometre warranty.

The Subaru Outback is a worthy car if you're looking for a car that will stick to the road on long trips and will hold you safe when driving on snow or ice. While it has ability off the road, you'll always feel like you're driving a car.
