Understand RTTL (Ring Tone Transfer Language)

You can easily create your own customized free mobile ringtones with the assist of RTTL Ring tone transfer language. As the name suggests, it is a simple text based language that enables you to create ringtones notes that you can upload into your mobile phones via various uploading techniques. It is quite easy to learn and use.

RTTL string is divided into three sections that are separated by colons:

For example: fifth:d=4,o=5,b=63:8P,8G5,8G5,8G5,2D#5

In the above case which is the Beethoven's fifth example, the first section (fifth) is known as RTTL melody. The second section (d=4,o=5,b=63) defines the default value of the music files. The third section (8P,8G5,8G5,8G5,2D#5) defines the RTTL melody.

The first section (fifth) will always have a defined structure of no more than 10 characters. The second section is bit complex as it describes the melody default that is divided into three values, namely duration, octave and beat. RTTL handlers these default values by defining each category with a single character and then assigns a value to that character. In the above example (d=4,o=5,b=63)duration is defined by letter d?, octave by letter o and beat with the letter b. The above example in lay terms could be said that the default value of the melody is any note played shall have duration of quarter note unless specified, any note identified will be played in the fifth octave and the tempo for this melody will be 63 beats per minute.

Duration
Duration can be referred as a length of musical sound or can be indicated as a length of time like play this note for a second or so.

Octave
Octave is the region that a scale occupies in a musical space. It could also be termed as the interval between one musical note and another with half or double frequency.

Beat
Beat is the pulse on the beat level, or can be said as basic time unit on a piece, when you tap your foot to music, each tap is a beat. Musically termed, it is measured on a per-minute basis. If a melody is assigned to 60 beats per minute, that means that melody will get one beat per second.
