It doesn't matter if you have just created a 100 page mega-site or a one page mini-site whose online address is a catchy keyword rich domain name, the short and very direct reply is a resounding NO! The bottom line is that unless you put forth a worthy effort to inform the world of your presence, it could be months before a person or search engine accidentally finds your newborn creation among the millions of entities on the World Wide Web.

There are very few direct ways of gaining instant notoriety for your website. Money talks, as always, and an expensive ad campaign can be created to herald the grand opening of your new online presence, especially if the site is geared for commerce and your financial survival as well. For the rest of us, there remain the usual methods of online promotion which are affordable but subjectively effective. The worthy equalizer in solidifying your web presence is the Search Engine.

Since the beginning of the internet, search engines have always existed in some shape or form. The commercialization of the internet brought forth more omnipresent entities which were always willing to help, search, and discover. Then mankind found a way to turn the humble search engine into a profit producing monster, whose treatment of your web presence now had the power to make or demolish your very existence. It became very apparent that he who controlled the search engines controlled the very life and death of most websites and online businesses. Professional search engine manipulators appeared on the scene, and were handsomely rewarded for their craft. Search engine owners, who were not profiting from the manipulation, were beginning to see their reputations of impartiality tarnished and had no selection but to fight back. This is a war which will continue long into the future.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the present name given to the manipulation and grooming of website content to insure the highest marks and greatest popularity ranking granted to any website. The constant battle between the search engines and website optimizers has produced an environment where the algorithms used in classifying a website have become extremely accurate and more difficult to manipulate. In addition, the search engines have now mounted full time self-improvement to hold themselves one step ahead of those looking to capitalize on some minor imperfection.

As noble as it may seem, there is a major downside to the constant evolution of the parameters which search engines use to classify and rank websites; it is now very easy for a seemingly well designed website to be ignored by the major search engines. It has become imperative that content, as well as the physical layout of the information on every page, fall into the stricter guidelines set forth by the search parameters. To add insult to injury, the days of the static webpage are numbered, as not only do search engines now look for fresh content to present to their audience, the constantly changing search parameters now dictate that optimized websites will become stale and less attractive to the search engines.
